Went for lunch w/my mom, who doesn't like Asian food. Well, she loved the miso and had a teriyaki chicken dish with veggies and rice and really enjoyed it. The crab wontons are made as they're ordered and the filling is made on site, and it rocks! The salad dressing is that familiar tangy one but way, way better. Sushi rolls were fresh and tasty, the staff was great, and we didn't feel rushed or like we were waiting too long for anything. I'll definitely be back!

We started coming here because Hook's across the street was always so crowded. We were not disappointed. The food is great and the staff is friendly. The first few times we were in the service was slow and they made some mistakes on the order but they seem to have worked out the issues. The food is always well prepared and fresh. Try the Volcano, amazing. The only thing is my husband would love if you could get some flavored Saki.

This is our third time coming since under new ownership. With each visit we've told ourselves... It will get better. Unfortunately it has not. This past visit will be out last. Basic orders were not taken, no one checked in with us after we received our food. Or waitress only realized there was an error about five minutes after my husband and I finished our meal (so at least 25min). Please don't waste your time, money, or a Friday night like we did.

Had dinner here tonight with a friend who just moved into the neighborhood. There was a line out the door at Hook's across the street, but it turns out this place is better -- at least for sushi. The sign above the front door, which reads "the art of Asian cuisine" hints at the creativity of Sushi Rock's makizushi. For example, the Lollipop Roll (salmon and crab) comes wrapped in a thinly peeled cucumber rather than a traditional seaweed nori, and its fresh, clean texture is complemented nicely by a tart ponzu sauce. Another inventive item is the Sushi Rock Tuna (tuna, crab, asparagus), a rice-free roll that's lightly battered and tempura-fried in a pair of sauces. Speaking of sauces, they're a big part of what makes Sushi Rock's feel unique -- from the pineapple sauce on the Hawaiian to the spicy aioli on the grouper to the "dynamite action-packed cream sauce" on the 007. Everything we tried was fresh and flavorful, and the service was friendly and professional. Our only minor quibbles are that the place is REALLY dark -- I could barely read the menu -- and they were out of conch, but happily subbed in crab on our Island Volcano Roll. The only thing we tried from the regular dinner menu was a traditional gyoza appetizer, which was fine but not extraordinary. Nitpicking aside, I'll definitely be back. (2/4/2009)

I thought I would give this another try after hearing about it from a few people. This time I had a hankering for some sushi. It was a special occasion so we gave ourselves free rein to order whatever, regardless of price. That could be how we got a $113 tab, which I was a bit shocked by but then we did order a lot. This is what $113 will buy at Sushi Rock Grill: seaweed salad, tuna tataki, 3 orders of nigiri, and 6 specialty rolls, 3 glasses of wine, 1 small carafe warm sake. Man the sushi was fantastic albeit a bit pricey. "Today's Sushi" roll was very good, lots of fresh fish, tempura lobster roll was awesome with a sweet sauce but not drowned in it like some people (Hooks) do. First Love roll was another good one with a sauce. Spider roll and Rainbow roll were very good. It seemed there were a lot of cooked or tempura rolls compared to raw fish but still a good selection of creative rolls. The one (name forgotten) rolled in cucumber was the only one that was just so-so. All in all, I would definitely go back for sushi, but maybe moderate what I order next time.

This is the only place in St. Pete I go for sushi. I can't speak for the rolls or the other entrees, as I always get Sashimi. But the Sashimi is excellent, fresh, and well presented. The sashimi dinner for 2 could feed 3, and they allow substitutions. The service was excellent, our server was polite and attentive without being intrusive. And there is also a patio where you can eat outside and enjoy the evening Florida weather.

I like the decor and the feel of the place. Valet parking was accomodative and quite nice. I had the sashimi dinner which I typically have and it did not meet my expectations in terms of quanity, quality or uniqueness of presentation. That dinner was $26 and it was worth $15. First time going here. I had heard great reviews. My boyfriend and I go, we wanted to sit outside, but there was only 1 table open and it was dirty, and the hostess was like hmm I guess inside it is. We were semi annoyed she didn't offer to clean the table, but figured sitting inside was fine- trying to go with the flow. Then it took literally 20 mins to get a waiter, and there was about 5 around and it was NOT busy inside at all. Then we order an appetizer (gyoza) and we both filled out the paper form for sushi. The gyoza came out fried- gross, got them to make them steamed, which is how it normally comes at every other Japanese sushi restaurant I have ever been at. THEN the best part. We get the steamed app and my sushi and about 10 mins goes by and we are both wondering where my boyfriends sushi order is, so he asked our waiter and he said ohhh I thought you only filled out one paper for sushi. The waiter should have went over our order before leaving the table. That's just ridiculous the waiter thought only one person was eating. He didn't even come and check on us after I took the first bite to see how our food was. HORRIBLE service. The sad thing is the food was good, not the best gyoza I have ever had, but the 2 rolls I got (spicy tuna, Mexican) were good. We will NEVER be going there again. Also, Hook's across the street had a long line of people waiting, we should have known who was better on a Friday night.

Tried Sushi Rock Grill for the first time over the weekend. Having tried 3 other places (Hiro's, Rakshana, Hooks) since moving to St Pete in November ... I can easily say Sushi Rock is our new found favorite place for sushi in St Pete. I would definitely echo what another of the reviews said in that you get what you pay for when comparing Sushi Rock and Hooks. While there we tried the lobster roll, volcano roll, sushi rock, mexican roll, and the tuna tataki. Everything was fresh and tasty. Especially notable was the sushi rock.

I bought a Groupon to check this place out. I have been looking for a go -to sushi spot now that I live in St. Pete. Art of Sushi did not disappoint. I sat outside, because it was a little dark inside and I had some reading I needed to do while I ate. They have a cute little patio in the front. The service was friendly and quick. I ordered a Dragon roll, Maui roll, and a Mexican roll. All three were great and I was a little embarrassed I ate it all myself. I overheard the couple next to me say they come all the time and order the same rolls I did. This was nice to hear, I will definitely have to come back and try other items.

I previously hesitated coming here because of some not so great reviews, but I'm glad we did. I was very pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere, the food and the service. We were able to get some really great rolls at happy hour price (salmon skin which is my favorite, and not a typical happy hour item), and then we picked a few rolls from the main menu. Everything we ordered was really good. The rolls had less rice and more fish, and the rice had a great flavor. We will definitely be back.

They put way sugar in those sauces they splatter on the sushi. I felt like I was eating a pancake. This is becoming more and more of a Southeast Asian restaurant due to the sugar content. Real Japanese sushi is not served with sweet sauce. The music was too loud for us to keep a conversation. The second most annoying thing behind the sugar is the fact that it was so dark you couldn't see your food. Dont get me wrong, I've been to darker restaurants, however, those restaurants light up their tables (and food) with strategically placed and directed lighting that at the very least light up the food on the table. In this place, the tables were pitch black.

Since moving to St. Pete I've been on the look for a new favorite sushi spot. It looks like they have lovely outdoor seating which I will have to check out next time. From what I could see it looked comfy, cool, and had lights if it started to get dark. Upscale interior, but without feeling like you needed to dress up. We sat at the bar and I got their lunch special, bento box. (Great deal and you get a lot for not too much. And my usual order when trying out a new place as it's a great way to taste a little of everything.) My company ordered a few pieces of this and that. We split a bottle of coconut sake, which threw off my tastebuds a bit. Their hamachi was divine and melted in my mouth. We enjoyed everything and will be sure to come back again. Our waiter was very nice, and pretty funny. The chef, although very skilled, wasn't very talkative. But hey, if he makes sushi that melts in my mouth, I'm far from complaining.

Sushi Rock is located across the street from its rival, Hooks. I'm not sure who was there first, but at one time they use to work with each other. Now they battle it out for the sushi crowd. I've been to both-SRG is definitely classier inside. I do love their Phoenix roll with a sliver of fresh lemon on top-divine.

We were initially going to Sushi Inc(which is part of soho sushi...which is my favorite) and the parking was horrendous and so we found this place...dang was it good!!!!! I have found another place besides my beloved soho sushi....the manager was busting tables and greeting the customers..and they have a huge variety of rolls...way more than soho...I'm sorry soho but I'm going to be coming here from now on!

I'm a big fan! The fish is fresh, the ambiance is sweet, the servers are friendly, and the sushi is reasonably priced. I've tried at least a dozen rolls here and have never been disappointed. It is a small restaurant with candle light and it doesn't seem like it would be a good place or large groups or children. There is both indoor and outdoor seating but not a lot of either. The food can take a while to get out to you but I feel like it is a product of the atmosphere, not laziness or lack of attention. I recommend it to anyone looking for a nice date night :)

My girlfriend wanted something light, so she suggested sushi. Instead of going to the place a minute from her, she said Hook's, which I was ok with. Hook's is good and has a varied menu. The interesting thing about this was that on this Sunday night, Hook's was closed. As we turn from their closed door, that beacon of light appeared across the street (no, not Dairy Inn) - oh yeah, I forgot that there is a sushi place DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM A SUSHI PLACE. So we headed over and was promptly sat facing Hook's, which turned into a fun viewing experience as about every 5 minutes someone made the same mistake with Hook's we did, and went straight to Sushi Rock Grill. The decor of the converted house is excellent - a nice courtyard where you can eat outside, the first table inside, usually for larger parties, is next to a fountain. The small, main dining room sits over 40. Decent sushi bar, but alas nothing too exotic like hamachi kama. We did stick with sushi - the Electric Sunrise (my girlfriend's favorite), the Samurai's Revenge (my favorite), the Tampa Roll (they had a sign that said it was the best in the bay), 2 pieces eel, two pieces octopus. The food was decent but neither of us were blown away, and the price a bit high. Chances are had Hook's not been closed, I would never have tried this place, so I'm glad I did, but I probably would not return. The staff, definitely short handed for the Hook's overflow, did their best but obviously even they weren't expecting to be packed on a Sunday. Also a note - not the fault of the staff at all, but there was a family watching Family Guy on a cell phone throughout the whole meal. If you want to watch TV and eat, do it at home, not at a restaurant.

I really wanted sushi recently so I ordered takeout. The food took a little bit longer than the estimated time they gave me. They weren't very busy (yet) for dinner. I always prefer a busy sushi place to make sure everything is staying fresh. When I got home, my egg rolls were overcooked and almost burnt. Luckily they still tasted pretty good. The "sirloin" that topped my Krazy Kobe roll turned me off instantly - and this is something I have ordered many times before. It looked like old beef and the bottom side was almost completely rare. It gave me an iffy feeling which is something I never want from sushi! I took the beef off and ate the rest of it. Hopefully this was just a one-time thing and they'll be back to normal soon.

We have been going to Sushi Rock since 2007. Back in the 2007-2010 years this place was great, our favorite in St. Pete. Since then the service and food quality have steadily gone down hill. I have given them my "last chance" a half a dozen times, but tonight was definitely our last. I have always excused the poor service, because I loved the sushi. Over the past year, we have had the sushi take over an hour to come out (with only maybe 5 tables there), had the servers refuse to honor emails I receive with discount offers, been told they don't have a single saki listed on the menu, yet I come back for the sushi...leading up to tonight. The service was slow and uninspiring, as usual. Only 4 tables there. We ordered an appetizer and sushi. Sushi took well over half an hour to come out, appetizer came after (no apologies). Sushi was not anything like it has been in the past (same rolls, completely different)...I would rank it below Publix take out sushi. All three rolls came out looking 95% the same...and bad. I have given this place one too many chances. This is my last.

Let me start out by saying that I used to frequent Sushi Rock enough that the waitstaff knew my name and my likes as soon as I walked in the door. The place has changed owners, however, and I am not so sure that I will be back again. Having introduced Sushi Rock to my husband when we first got together, it was one of his faves, too. In fact, he chose Sushi Rock as the place where he wanted to celebrate his 50th birthday. As soon as we walked in, I knew something was up. The normally ambiance was gone, replaced with overly bright lights. I saw none of the usual staff that I have come to know over the years. Instead, we were seated by a hostess who seemed, in a word, clueless. We were informed a few minutes later that she would be taking care of our table. She said she isn't normally allowed to wait tables, but they didn't have anyone else at the time. She took our drink orders and disappeared. Another good 5m or so passed, and no drinks. We only ordered iced tea, so there was no mixing involved. When she returned to take our orders without the tea, she gave me an odd look and said she'd get them. I was somewhat relieved that she actually wrote the order down, but that feeling soon turned to bewilderment. I ordered the sunomono salad, only crab with extra sesame seeds. When it arrived, it had shrimp, octopus and conch on it and a tiny sprinkle of sesame seeds. That, however, wasn't the worst offense. Apparently, whoever prepared the salad didn't bother to actually rinse the cucumbers after they were salted. It was like eating a cucumber flavored salt lick. The octopus was terribly chewy. The sunomono was, without a doubt, my all-time favorite salad. Not anymore. Fortunately, they didn't screw up my husband's seaweed salad. For entrees, I ordered a couple rolls, and my husband ordered the negamaki dinner. We drive over from the USF area just for the negamaki. That's how much my husband loved it. My rolls came out one at a time, and they were sloppily made. One of them was just falling apart. Meanwhile, my husband was still waiting for his dinner. We asked the other waiter what was going on since the hostess disappeared. He said he'd check. Several more minutes passed. The hostess shows up again and says it'll be out soon. More time passes, and still no sign of the negamaki. She comes back to the table and looks flustered that there is no negamaki sitting on the table. I ask her what the hold up was. She finally confessed that she had neglected to put the order in even though she WROTE it down. When it finally did come out, they gave him the appetizer size, not the entree size that he'd asked for. At that point, we'd had it. We paid the check, left a $1 tip, and got the hell out. I will miss you, old Sushi Rock.

They had just opened for the evening and we were one of the first there. The service was great as we sat at the bar. I had a roll of sorts that was deep-fried. Not exactly what i was looking for but the variety was nice for a change. The taste are unique and you'll find the traditional as well as some interesting infusions. I consider myself to be a minimalist with my sushi as in great fish no fancy sauces/eggs. I wouldn't hesitate to go if asked but going alone I'd choose another sushi place.

I actually really do like the food here, It's just a bit pricey for the amount of food you get. My favorite is the Tiger roll. It's delicious! But for $13 it's way too small. I feel like I can only come here if I have a lot of extra money to spend on Sushi. There's so many other options out there that are budget friendly though.

My sister and I met a friend here for lunch. I generally love the downtown St. Pete area and think there are tons of good restaurants there. So, I was surprised at the choice of a nearly empty sushi restaurant with little atmosphere. In spite of the fact that we were one of only 3 parties in the restaurant, it took about 15 minutes for the waiter to take our order. We were happy to order the $3 edamame at the lunch happy hour price, but had a harder time choosing our sushi. All of the specialty rolls were pretty overpriced, $12 - $16 per roll. The appetizer was pretty good, but the sushi was really average. I would honestly put it on par with some of the better grocery store sushi. It was definitely not worth the price. So, with Sushi Rock you get no atmosphere and mediocre sushi at a high price. As many great sushi restaurants as their are in the Bay Area and with the variety of restaurants in downtown St. Pete I would probably not come back.

The first time I have been here and I will definitely go back. We had 9 in our group and got there pretty late on a Saturday night but the staff was welcoming. We sat outside and the ambiance was perfect! Our waiter was wonderful and kept our glasses full the whole time. We ordered a lot of sushi and every one we ordered was delicious. I would definitely recommend the vegetable rolls too.

My husband and I decided to try for the first time this place, since we always go to Hooks across the street. They have parking but it is only Valet since their parking space is so small. The interior is very stylish and upscale looking. We ordered 3 rolls and an appetizer and an dessert. The bill came out around 50 bucks. The rolls are all tasty and fresh, however the rolls are rather small for their prices, and they definitely skimped on fish they put inside the rolls unfortunately. That is why the rolls seemed so small. Make sure to try their crab rangoon and fried banana. They are so delicious! I will be happier if they use more fish for sushi and /or lower the prices.

I'm basing my review off my experience - not my husbands. My husband ordered sushi and he said it was pretty good. So maybe in regards sushi, this place is 3 stars. However, I don't eat sushi. I ordered lemongrass chicken. There is no reason why a sushi place can't also have good entrees. All of the other sushi places in St. Pete do!! When this arrived to my table, I was shocked. Why? The description said it came with a chicken breast - typical, right? Well, not the chicken breast itself! This chicken breast was AT LEAST 3 times the normal size of a chicken breast. I'm sorry, but that freaked me out. I braved eating the chicken and it was chewy and had an odd flavor. For the first time in my life, I sent my meal back to the kitchen. I decided to go vegetarian for the second go around and got pad thai. I figured at least that had to be good, since pad thai is a staple of Thai cuisine. Not so much. Again, the flavor was a little "off" and it just didn't do the dish any justice (I've had a lot of good pad Thai) Thankfully we had a gift certificate and didn't have to pay out of pocket. We will not be returning here. There are so many restaurants around that have both amazing sushi and Thai cuisine.

Decor - Beautiful Server - Meh, he was okay Food Timing - Horrible, waited 30 minutes for our entrees, waited 20 minutes for 1 dessert and we were the first ones in the restaurant when they opened so it wasn't that busy. Food - the Teriyaki Chicken was tough and no flavor. The vegetables were perfectly seasoned and tender. The desert (coconut fried cheesecake) was kinda burnt but tasted okay. Chicken Teriyaki Sushi Roll was not that great. The chicken in the sushi was again tough and dry - no flavor. The spicy tuna roll had a lot of heat but not much flavor. I have had better sushi at other places. We probably would not go back for regular priced menu - might check it out during happy hour.

Went for happy hour on a Tuesday evening based on a recommendation from an acquaintance. They have a basic selection of sushi for $3.95 during happy hour (5-7pm). We could have easily filled our bellies with those selections. Service was really good, esp since I noticed he was balancing multiple tables inside and out. Tuna dishes were good = fresh. I'm not a super huge fan of the rolls that are fried and/or stuffed with cream cheese and we were able to enjoy several options that were free of both. Their menu seems to be salmon heavy, which is probably a plus for most folks, not the case for us as neither of us care for it. The veggie roll was disappointing; would have preferred spinach instead of the lettuce. Will probably skip it on the next visit, which is disappointing since I love me some veggies. We both enjoyed the Crystal Roll and will order it again. Also tried the spring roll (also based on recommendation) and it was good but nothing outstanding. Atmosphere is relaxed; you have a choice of dining inside or on their patio. Manager was very visible (esp as they got busy, which was nice to see). There is a small sushi bar as well. Parking on a busy night may be challenging. The parking lot is small but street parking is available. Recommendation: It's a go. Great value at happy hour.

Not impressed, especially in recent visits. Got 3 rolls takeout and they didn't put any of the sauces on the rolls. Just recently went with a $25 CrowdSavings voucher (that I paid $12 for) and had a $60 check (two meals, appetizer, kids meal, wine, etc) and when they saw the CrowdSavings voucher, they told me that I couldn't get the happy hour price for our appetizer roll. The roll was $3.95 during happy hour and $5.95 regular price. Nowhere on the voucher or menu did it say anything about this. Its only $2 and I paid it, but its poor customer service. That, along with the mediocre quality of the food, means I will never be back. Ratchada Thai in downtown St Pete is much better, and they seem to appreciate their customers.

We went for sushi after seeing the yelp reviews. We were in town for a week and generally rely on the wisdom of yelpers to steer us to good food. I don't think I've ever been this disappointed. Perhaps it was an off night, but wow, it was bad. For starters, sushi is all about rice, hence the name. The rice here was packed so tight it was like mochi. The vinegar flavor was nonexistent and then it stuck to the top of my mouth. I've never had that happen before. Yuck! Then the fish. Well to put it bluntly, it was warm. Yes, warm. I'm not sure if they had it under a heat lamp or what, but warm sushi is not what anyone is looking for. I hate writing bad reviews, but this had to be written. As for service, I felt like a slight imposition to the waitress. Considering it was a slow weeknight, I expect a smile and some friendly check-ins to see if we needed anything. We didn't get much of a smile, but it wasn't the worst service ever. We've had sushi everywhere. From Japan to Mexico. This place ties with a hole in the wall in Houston for worst sushi experience we've had.

First sushi I've had while in St. Petersburg area, but it was quite good according to my West Coast standards. The lobster roll was also great; we also had the volcano, island volcano rolls, spicy tuna roll. The menu idea for ordering was cute--you get a laminated order form and mark off the choices with a marker. Very useful! Will definitely go again next time I'm here.

Went for the first time for dinner. Server, Annie, was the most unfriendly person I have ever encountered. I told her it was our first time there and asked what she recommended. She said "sushi". Well, no s**t! So, I said what is popular here? She said " we just updated our menu". Well, thanks for the advice, dipwad! That helped a lot! She never asked if we wanted any drinks, so finally I said "hows the hot saki here? She said " haven't you ever had it before?" I said yes, and her smart ass reply is "well they are all the same". So much for a knowledgeable, helpful server! Food was mediocre. We got a Crunch Roll, Tuna roll and a chicken roll. ehhhh. Crab rangoons would have been good if they hadn't been cooked and then sat under a lamp to be served cold and chewy. Saki was not good! Our crappy server tried to take our plates with food still on them, without asking if we were done. Would never go back! We love Hook's across the street and have always wanted to try Sushi Rock, but sorry we wasted 50.00! Between "Annie, with the stick up her a**, never cracking a smile", and the crappy food, don't waste your time or money! If I could give it no stars, I would!

Used to live within walking distance and would eat there frequently. I've never been disappointed by a meal in all my times there. Excellent selection of Eel rolls. More expensive then Hooks across the street but in the case of these two establishments you get what you pay for.

Went for lunch w/my mom, who doesn't like Asian food. Well, she loved the miso and had a teriyaki chicken dish with veggies and rice and really enjoyed it. The crab wontons are made as they're ordered and the filling is made on site, and it rocks! The salad dressing is that familiar tangy one but way, way better. Sushi rolls were fresh and tasty, the staff was great, and we didn't feel rushed or like we were waiting too long for anything. I'll definitely be back!

We started coming here because Hook's across the street was always so crowded. We were not disappointed. The food is great and the staff is friendly. The first few times we were in the service was slow and they made some mistakes on the order but they seem to have worked out the issues. The food is always well prepared and fresh. Try the Volcano, amazing. The only thing is my husband would love if you could get some flavored Saki.

This is our third time coming since under new ownership. With each visit we've told ourselves... It will get better. Unfortunately it has not. This past visit will be out last. Basic orders were not taken, no one checked in with us after we received our food. Had dinner here tonight with a friend who just moved into the neighborhood. There was a line out the door at Hook's across the street, but it turns out this place is better -- at least for sushi. The sign above the front door, which reads "the art of Asian cuisine" hints at the creativity of Sushi Rock's makizushi. For example, the Lollipop Roll (salmon and crab) comes wrapped in a thinly peeled cucumber rather than a traditional seaweed nori, and its fresh, clean texture is complemented nicely by a tart ponzu sauce. Another inventive item is the Sushi Rock Tuna (tuna, crab, asparagus), a rice-free roll that's lightly battered and tempura-fried in a pair of sauces. Speaking of sauces, they're a big part of what makes Sushi Rock's feel unique -- from the pineapple sauce on the Hawaiian to the spicy aioli on the grouper to the "dynamite action-packed cream sauce" on the 007. Everything we tried was fresh and flavorful, and the service was friendly and professional. Our only minor quibbles are that the place is REALLY dark -- I could barely read the menu -- and they were out of conch, but happily subbed in crab on our Island Volcano Roll. The only thing we tried from the regular dinner menu was a traditional gyoza appetizer, which was fine but not extraordinary. Nitpicking aside, I'll definitely be back. (2/4/2009)

I thought I would give this another try after hearing about it from a few people. This time I had a hankering for some sushi. It was a special occasion so we gave ourselves free rein to order whatever, regardless of price. That could be how we got a $113 tab, which I was a bit shocked by but then we did order a lot. This is what $113 will buy at Sushi Rock Grill: seaweed salad, tuna tataki, 3 orders of nigiri, and 6 specialty rolls, 3 glasses of wine, 1 small carafe warm sake. Man the sushi was fantastic albeit a bit pricey. "Today's Sushi" roll was very good, lots of fresh fish, tempura lobster roll was awesome with a sweet sauce but not drowned in it like some people (Hooks) do. First Love roll was another good one with a sauce. Spider roll and Rainbow roll were very good. It seemed there were a lot of cooked or tempura rolls compared to raw fish but still a good selection of creative rolls. The one (name forgotten) rolled in cucumber was the only one that was just so-so. All in all, I would definitely go back for sushi, but maybe moderate what I order next time.

This is the only place in St. Pete I go for sushi. I can't speak for the rolls or the other entrees, as I always get Sashimi. But the Sashimi is excellent, fresh, and well presented. The sashimi dinner for 2 could feed 3, and they allow substitutions. The service was excellent, our server was polite and attentive without being intrusive. And there is also a patio where you can eat outside and enjoy the evening Florida weather.

I like the decor and the feel of the place. Valet parking was accomodative and quite nice. I had the sashimi dinner which I typically have and it did not meet my expectations in terms of quanity, quality or uniqueness of presentation. That dinner was $26 and it was worth $15. I will be looking for a new sushi restaurant in SP.

First time going here. I had heard great reviews. My boyfriend and I go, we wanted to sit outside, but there was only 1 table open and it was dirty, and the hostess was like hmm I guess inside it is. We were semi annoyed she didn't offer to clean the table, but figured sitting inside was fine- trying to go with the flow. Then it took literally 20 mins to get a waiter, and there was about 5 around and it was NOT busy inside at all. Then we order an appetizer (gyoza) and we both filled out the paper form for sushi. The gyoza came out fried- gross, got them to make them steamed, which is how it normally comes at every other Japanese sushi restaurant I have ever been at. THEN the best part. We get the steamed app and my sushi and about 10 mins goes by and we are both wondering where my boyfriends sushi order is, so he asked our waiter and he said ohhh I thought you only filled out one paper for sushi. The waiter should have went over our order before leaving the table. That's just ridiculous the waiter thought only one person was eating. He didn't even come and check on us after I took the first bite to see how our food was. HORRIBLE service. The sad thing is the food was good, not the best gyoza I have ever had, but the 2 rolls I got (spicy tuna, Mexican) were good. We will NEVER be going there again. Also, Hook's across the street had a long line of people waiting, we should have known who was better on a Friday night.

Tried Sushi Rock Grill for the first time over the weekend. Having tried 3 other places (Hiro's, Rakshana, Hooks) since moving to St Pete in November ... I can easily say Sushi Rock is our new found favorite place for sushi in St Pete. I would definitely echo what another of the reviews said in that you get what you pay for when comparing Sushi Rock and Hooks. While there we tried the lobster roll, volcano roll, sushi rock, mexican roll, and the tuna tataki. Everything was fresh and tasty. Especially notable was the sushi rock.

I bought a Groupon to check this place out. I have been looking for a go -to sushi spot now that I live in St. Pete. Art of Sushi did not disappoint. I sat outside, because it was a little dark inside and I had some reading I needed to do while I ate. They have a cute little patio in the front. The service was friendly and quick. I ordered a Dragon roll, Maui roll, and a Mexican roll. All three were great and I was a little embarrassed I ate it all myself. I overheard the couple next to me say they come all the time and order the same rolls I did. This was nice to hear, I will definitely have to come back and try other items.

I previously hesitated coming here because of some not so great reviews, but I'm glad we did. I was very pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere, the food and the service. We were able to get some really great rolls at happy hour price (salmon skin which is my favorite, and not a typical happy hour item), and then we picked a few rolls from the main menu. Everything we ordered was really good. The rolls had less rice and more fish, and the rice had a great flavor. We will definitely be back.

They put way sugar in those sauces they splatter on the sushi. I felt like I was eating a pancake. This is becoming more and more of a Southeast Asian restaurant due to the sugar content. Real Japanese sushi is not served with sweet sauce. The music was too loud for us to keep a conversation. The second most annoying thing behind the sugar is the fact that it was so dark you couldn't see your food. Dont get me wrong, I've been to darker restaurants, however, those restaurants light up their tables (and food) with strategically placed and directed lighting that at the very least light up the food on the table. In this place, the tables were pitch black.

Since moving to St. Pete I've been on the look for a new favorite sushi spot. It looks like they have lovely outdoor seating which I will have to check out next time. From what I could see it looked comfy, cool, and had lights if it started to get dark. Upscale interior, but without feeling like you needed to dress up. We sat at the bar and I got their lunch special, bento box. (Great deal and you get a lot for not too much. And my usual order when trying out a new place as it's a great way to taste a little of everything.) My company ordered a few pieces of this and that. We split a bottle of coconut sake, which threw off my tastebuds a bit. Their hamachi was divine and melted in my mouth. We enjoyed everything and will be sure to come back again. Our waiter was very nice, and pretty funny. The chef, although very skilled, wasn't very talkative. But hey, if he makes sushi that melts in my mouth, I'm far from complaining.

Sushi Rock is located across the street from its rival, Hooks. I'm not sure who was there first, but at one time they use to work with each other. Now they battle it out for the sushi crowd. I've been to both-SRG is definitely classier inside. I do love their Phoenix roll with a sliver of fresh lemon on top-divine.

We were initially going to Sushi Inc(which is part of soho sushi...which is my favorite) and the parking was horrendous and so we found this place...dang was it good!!!!! I have found another place besides my beloved soho sushi....the manager was busting tables and greeting the customers..and they have a huge variety of rolls...way more than soho...I'm sorry soho but I'm going to be coming here from now on!

I'm a big fan! The fish is fresh, the ambiance is sweet, the servers are friendly, and the sushi is reasonably priced. I've tried at least a dozen rolls here and have never been disappointed. It is a small restaurant with candle light and it doesn't seem like it would be a good place or large groups or children. There is both indoor and outdoor seating but not a lot of either. The food can take a while to get out to you but I feel like it is a product of the atmosphere, not laziness or lack of attention. I recommend it to anyone looking for a nice date night :)

My girlfriend wanted something light, so she suggested sushi. Instead of going to the place a minute from her, she said Hook's, which I was ok with. Hook's is good and has a varied menu. The interesting thing about this was that on this Sunday night, Hook's was closed. As we turn from their closed door, that beacon of light appeared across the street (no, not Dairy Inn) - oh yeah, I forgot that there is a sushi place DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM A SUSHI PLACE. So we headed over and was promptly sat facing Hook's, which turned into a fun viewing experience as about every 5 minutes someone made the same mistake with Hook's we did, and went straight to Sushi Rock Grill. The decor of the converted house is excellent - a nice courtyard where you can eat outside, the first table inside, usually for larger parties, is next to a fountain. The small, main dining room sits over 40. Decent sushi bar, but alas nothing too exotic like hamachi kama. We did stick with sushi - the Electric Sunrise (my girlfriend's favorite), the Samurai's Revenge (my favorite), the Tampa Roll (they had a sign that said it was the best in the bay), 2 pieces eel, two pieces octopus. The food was decent but neither of us were blown away, and the price a bit high. Chances are had Hook's not been closed, I would never have tried this place, so I'm glad I did, but I probably would not return. The staff, definitely short handed for the Hook's overflow, did their best but obviously even they weren't expecting to be packed on a Sunday. Also a note - not the fault of the staff at all, but there was a family watching Family Guy on a cell phone throughout the whole meal. If you want to watch TV and eat, do it at home, not at a restaurant.

I really wanted sushi recently so I ordered takeout. The food took a little bit longer than the estimated time they gave me. They weren't very busy (yet) for dinner. I always prefer a busy sushi place to make sure everything is staying fresh. When I got home, my egg rolls were overcooked and almost burnt. Luckily they still tasted pretty good. The "sirloin" that topped my Krazy Kobe roll turned me off instantly - and this is something I have ordered many times before. It looked like old beef and the bottom side was almost completely rare. It gave me an iffy feeling which is something I never want from sushi! I took the beef off and ate the rest of it. Hopefully this was just a one-time thing and they'll be back to normal soon.

We have been going to Sushi Rock since 2007. Back in the 2007-2010 years this place was great, our favorite in St. Pete. Since then the service and food quality have steadily gone down hill. I have given them my "last chance" a half a dozen times, but tonight was definitely our last. I have always excused the poor service, because I loved the sushi. Over the past year, we have had the sushi take over an hour to come out (with only maybe 5 tables there), had the servers refuse to honor emails I receive with discount offers, been told they don't have a single saki listed on the menu, yet I come back for the sushi...leading up to tonight. The service was slow and uninspiring, as usual. Only 4 tables there. We ordered an appetizer and sushi. Sushi took well over half an hour to come out, appetizer came after (no apologies). Sushi was not anything like it has been in the past (same rolls, completely different)...I would rank it below Publix take out sushi. All three rolls came out looking 95% the same...and bad. I have given this place one too many chances. This is my last.

Let me start out by saying that I used to frequent Sushi Rock enough that the waitstaff knew my name and my likes as soon as I walked in the door. The place has changed owners, however, and I am not so sure that I will be back again. Having introduced Sushi Rock to my husband when we first got together, it was one of his faves, too. In fact, he chose Sushi Rock as the place where he wanted to celebrate his 50th birthday. As soon as we walked in, I knew something was up. The normally ambiance was gone, replaced with overly bright lights. I saw none of the usual staff that I have come to know over the years. Instead, we were seated by a hostess who seemed, in a word, clueless. We were informed a few minutes later that she would be taking care of our table. She said she isn't normally allowed to wait tables, but they didn't have anyone else at the time. She took our drink orders and disappeared. Another good 5m or so passed, and no drinks. We only ordered iced tea, so there was no mixing involved. When she returned to take our orders without the tea, she gave me an odd look and said she'd get them. I was somewhat relieved that she actually wrote the order down, but that feeling soon turned to bewilderment. I ordered the sunomono salad, only crab with extra sesame seeds. When it arrived, it had shrimp, octopus and conch on it and a tiny sprinkle of sesame seeds. That, however, wasn't the worst offense. Apparently, whoever prepared the salad didn't bother to actually rinse the cucumbers after they were salted. It was like eating a cucumber flavored salt lick. The octopus was terribly chewy. The sunomono was, without a doubt, my all-time favorite salad. Not anymore. Fortunately, they didn't screw up my husband's seaweed salad. For entrees, I ordered a couple rolls, and my husband ordered the negamaki dinner. We drive over from the USF area just for the negamaki. That's how much my husband loved it. My rolls came out one at a time, and they were sloppily made. One of them was just falling apart. Meanwhile, my husband was still waiting for his dinner. We asked the other waiter what was going on since the hostess disappeared. He said he'd check. Several more minutes passed. The hostess shows up again and says it'll be out soon. More time passes, and still no sign of the negamaki. She comes back to the table and looks flustered that there is no negamaki sitting on the table. I ask her what the hold up was. She finally confessed that she had neglected to put the order in even though she WROTE it down. When it finally did come out, they gave him the appetizer size, not the entree size that he'd asked for. At that point, we'd had it. We paid the check, left a $1 tip, and got the hell out. I will miss you, old Sushi Rock.

They had just opened for the evening and we were one of the first there. The service was great as we sat at the bar. I had a roll of sorts that was deep-fried. Not exactly what i was looking for but the variety was nice for a change. The taste are unique and you'll find the traditional as well as some interesting infusions. I consider myself to be a minimalist with my sushi as in great fish no fancy sauces/eggs. I wouldn't hesitate to go if asked but going alone I'd choose another sushi place.

I actually really do like the food here, It's just a bit pricey for the amount of food you get. My favorite is the Tiger roll. It's delicious! But for $13 it's way too small. I feel like I can only come here if I have a lot of extra money to spend on Sushi. There's so many other options out there that are budget friendly though.

My sister and I met a friend here for lunch. I generally love the downtown St. Pete area and think there are tons of good restaurants there. So, I was surprised at the choice of a nearly empty sushi restaurant with little atmosphere. In spite of the fact that we were one of only 3 parties in the restaurant, it took about 15 minutes for the waiter to take our order. We were happy to order the $3 edamame at the lunch happy hour price, but had a harder time choosing our sushi. All of the specialty rolls were pretty overpriced, $12 - $16 per roll. The appetizer was pretty good, but the sushi was really average. I would honestly put it on par with some of the better grocery store sushi. It was definitely not worth the price. So, with Sushi Rock you get no atmosphere and mediocre sushi at a high price. As many great sushi restaurants as their are in the Bay Area and with the variety of restaurants in downtown St. Pete I would probably not come back.

The first time I have been here and I will definitely go back. We had 9 in our group and got there pretty late on a Saturday night but the staff was welcoming. We sat outside and the ambiance was perfect! Our waiter was wonderful and kept our glasses full the whole time. We ordered a lot of sushi and every one we ordered was delicious. I would definitely recommend the vegetable rolls too.

My husband and I decided to try for the first time this place, since we always go to Hooks across the street. They have parking but it is only Valet since their parking space is so small. The interior is very stylish and upscale looking. We ordered 3 rolls and an appetizer and an dessert. The bill came out around 50 bucks. The rolls are all tasty and fresh, however the rolls are rather small for their prices, and they definitely skimped on fish they put inside the rolls unfortunately. That is why the rolls seemed so small. Make sure to try their crab rangoon and fried banana. They are so delicious! I will be happier if they use more fish for sushi and /or lower the prices.

I'm basing my review off my experience - not my husbands. My husband ordered sushi and he said it was pretty good. So maybe in regards sushi, this place is 3 stars. However, I don't eat sushi. I ordered lemongrass chicken. There is no reason why a sushi place can't also have good entrees. All of the other sushi places in St. Pete do!! When this arrived to my table, I was shocked. Why? The description said it came with a chicken breast - typical, right? Well, not the chicken breast itself! This chicken breast was AT LEAST 3 times the normal size of a chicken breast. I'm sorry, but that freaked me out. I braved eating the chicken and it was chewy and had an odd flavor. For the first time in my life, I sent my meal back to the kitchen. I decided to go vegetarian for the second go around and got pad thai. I figured at least that had to be good, since pad thai is a staple of Thai cuisine. Not so much. Again, the flavor was a little "off" and it just didn't do the dish any justice (I've had a lot of good pad Thai) Thankfully we had a gift certificate and didn't have to pay out of pocket. We will not be returning here. There are so many restaurants around that have both amazing sushi and Thai cuisine.

Decor - Beautiful Server - Meh, he was okay Food Timing - Horrible, waited 30 minutes for our entrees, waited 20 minutes for 1 dessert and we were the first ones in the restaurant when they opened so it wasn't that busy. Food - the Teriyaki Chicken was tough and no flavor. The vegetables were perfectly seasoned and tender. The desert (coconut fried cheesecake) was kinda burnt but tasted okay. Chicken Teriyaki Sushi Roll was not that great. The chicken in the sushi was again tough and dry - no flavor. The spicy tuna roll had a lot of heat but not much flavor. I have had better sushi at other places. We probably would not go back for regular priced menu - might check it out during happy hour.

Went for happy hour on a Tuesday evening based on a recommendation from an acquaintance. They have a basic selection of sushi for $3.95 during happy hour (5-7pm). We could have easily filled our bellies with those selections. Service was really good, esp since I noticed he was balancing multiple tables inside and out. Tuna dishes were good = fresh. I'm not a super huge fan of the rolls that are fried and/or stuffed with cream cheese and we were able to enjoy several options that were free of both. Their menu seems to be salmon heavy, which is probably a plus for most folks, not the case for us as neither of us care for it. The veggie roll was disappointing; would have preferred spinach instead of the lettuce. Will probably skip it on the next visit, which is disappointing since I love me some veggies. We both enjoyed the Crystal Roll and will order it again. Also tried the spring roll (also based on recommendation) and it was good but nothing outstanding. Atmosphere is relaxed; you have a choice of dining inside or on their patio. Manager was very visible (esp as they got busy, which was nice to see). There is a small sushi bar as well. Parking on a busy night may be challenging. The parking lot is small but street parking is available. Recommendation: It's a go. Great value at happy hour.

Not impressed, especially in recent visits. Got 3 rolls takeout and they didn't put any of the sauces on the rolls. Just recently went with a $25 CrowdSavings voucher (that I paid $12 for) and had a $60 check (two meals, appetizer, kids meal, wine, etc) and when they saw the CrowdSavings voucher, they told me that I couldn't get the happy hour price for our appetizer roll. The roll was $3.95 during happy hour and $5.95 regular price. Nowhere on the voucher or menu did it say anything about this. Its only $2 and I paid it, but its poor customer service. That, along with the mediocre quality of the food, means I will never be back. Ratchada Thai in downtown St Pete is much better, and they seem to appreciate their customers.

We went for sushi after seeing the yelp reviews. We were in town for a week and generally rely on the wisdom of yelpers to steer us to good food. I don't think I've ever been this disappointed. Perhaps it was an off night, but wow, it was bad. For starters, sushi is all about rice, hence the name. The rice here was packed so tight it was like mochi. The vinegar flavor was nonexistent and then it stuck to the top of my mouth. I've never had that happen before. Yuck! Then the fish. Well to put it bluntly, it was warm. Yes, warm. I'm not sure if they had it under a heat lamp or what, but warm sushi is not what anyone is looking for. I hate writing bad reviews, but this had to be written. As for service, I felt like a slight imposition to the waitress. Considering it was a slow weeknight, I expect a smile and some friendly check-ins to see if we needed anything. We didn't get much of a smile, but it wasn't the worst service ever. We've had sushi everywhere. From Japan to Mexico. This place ties with a hole in the wall in Houston for worst sushi experience we've had.

SRG is great. I go there so often, the waitresses know my friend and me. Fresh sushi, great miso soup and terrific service. It is small..but that is ok. The atmosphere is worth it.

First sushi I've had while in St. Petersburg area, but it was quite good according to my West Coast standards. The lobster roll was also great; we also had the volcano, island volcano rolls, spicy tuna roll. The menu idea for ordering was cute--you get a laminated order form and mark off the choices with a marker. Very useful! Will definitely go again next time I'm here.

Went for the first time for dinner. Server, Annie, was the most unfriendly person I have ever encountered. I told her it was our first time there and asked what she recommended. She said "sushi". Well, no s**t! So, I said what is popular here? She said " we just updated our menu". Well, thanks for the advice, dipwad! That helped a lot! She never asked if we wanted any drinks, so finally I said "hows the hot saki here? She said " haven't you ever had it before?" I said yes, and her smart ass reply is "well they are all the same". So much for a knowledgeable, helpful server! Food was mediocre. We got a Crunch Roll, Tuna roll and a chicken roll. ehhhh. Crab rangoons would have been good if they hadn't been cooked and then sat under a lamp to be served cold and chewy. Saki was not good! Our crappy server tried to take our plates with food still on them, without asking if we were done. Would never go back! We love Hook's across the street and have always wanted to try Sushi Rock, but sorry we wasted 50.00! Between "Annie, with the stick up her a**, never cracking a smile", and the crappy food, don't waste your time or money! If I could give it no stars, I would!

Used to live within walking distance and would eat there frequently. I've never been disappointed by a meal in all my times there. Excellent selection of Eel rolls. More expensive then Hooks across the street but in the case of these two establishments you get what you pay for.
